MINNESOTA YOUTH RUGBY
Youth Rugby in Minnesota was started in the spring of 2001 in the fair
city of Belle Plaine. The energetic Kiwi, Max Winders and his wonderful
wife, Karin introduced the game to a small town in Minnesota with
great results. The program took 70 boys and girls ages 6 to 11 and
made-up what is now known as the "Belle Plain Barbarians."
Most recently, during the school year of 2002, Dan "DJ" Johnson
brought touch rugby to some physical education classrooms at Alice
Smith Elementary in Hopkins. With organizational support of Rhonda
Smith and coaching by DJ, Thor Bolstad, plus others, youth rugby
was launched in Hopkins that spring. Hopkins practices on Saturday
mornings, followed by a social of hot dogs, chips and juice.
