Ed Viehman submitted the following on Friday:
In my calls to Kurt Hagman and Ed O'Orouke the latest news is that
the combined team of over 50's from Minneapolis,Metropolis,Banshees
and ISU have made it to the Finals at Aspen once again.Overall ,the
injury update is not all that bad for a few for guys in their late
50's.Garry Kittelson has cracked ribs and is out but put in a brilliant
performance by all accounts.Johnny Mulkin got his shoulder stepped-on
and may be out for the Final and a lot of guys are bearing the scars
and aches of altitude and age.Early reports from Mike Clemments
for all the pack is that O'Rourke ,against all odds and reputation, has
only let one scrum collapse but has blamed that on a bruised tailbone. For
the backline, there has been no scoring and the only scoring offensively
has been on penalty kicks by Kurt, who is getting a tired leg.Defensively, the
boys have allowed only one try in the early match. The over 50's
will be playing at 10AM Sunday.Good luck and Cheers.ED
Isaac Johnson submitted the following summary while offering these
photos:
Despite rainy and cold weather, muddy field conditions, and a sketchy
tour bus ride from Denver, Metropolis enjoyed a truly PERFECT and
successful Aspen Ruggerfest 2006. Between the open side, 35's, 45's
and 50's, Metropolis RFC sent over 75 people to what some consider
the most successful Ruggerfest ever for our club.
The Metropolis RFC open side left for Aspen looking to build team
unity, morale and develop the club under new Coach Rowlands. That
side went 2-2, knocking off the County Sundogs 36-7 (Kansas City)
and Denver Highlanders 14-5, and losses to the Denver Barbarians
24-0 (Superleague) and Mountain Select All-Stars 25-0. That showing
put them in 6th place.
35's (teamed with Denver Barbos) – 4th place
45's (teamed with Missouri) – 1st Place, with our very own
Pedro was named tournament MVP. The tournament officials must have
agreed with his wife Paula when she said "That man is a god!"
Kurt Hagman was voted MVP of the 50+ division also. What a leg
on that boy!
50's (Teamed with Iowa) – 1st place
Party (teamed as Amish, Nuns, and Cows) – 3-0 – 1st
place
3 championships, 4th place, 6th place – no other club can
claim that success! All in all a great trip for all ages, old with
new…….maybe a 2007 trip in store??????
Thanks to everyone who came and made it such a fantastic time for
anyone that was there.
