Metropolis RFC represents a winning combination of strong rugby play and strong club spirit. Our club is the metamorphosis of two rich rugby traditions via the consolidation in 1992 of Minneapolis RFC, founded in 1960, and Metro RFC, founded in 1980. The rugby history books will remember Minneapolis powerhouse rugby pushing its way into the USARFU National Club Championships in the late 70's, and the relentless attacking Metro backline rising to national sevens rugby prominence in the late 80's and early 90's. The result of the merger is a balanced Metropolis style of rugby that stresses strength and mobility in the forwards, and quick ball to the backs where creativity, aggressiveness and agility dominate play.

Metropolis RFC is currently a USARFU Division I club. While in Division II, Metropolis displayed its determination to improve its rankings by advancing to the final eight clubs in the 1998 Division II Club Championships. After winning the Midwest Championship in 2004, Metropolis was promoted to Division I status. The team went on to finish 8th at the 2004 Division II Club Championships. In summer sevens rugby competition, Metro/ Metropolis teams have advanced to USARFU national club championships five times since 1992.

There's a spot for every level of rugger at Metropolis RFC. The club promotes fall league schedules for both its first and second teams. A third developmental / social side is always ready to fill in at the fun tournaments, and the Metro Old Boys charter guarantees two games each year, spaced between golfing, bowling, pub dart and bragging competitions. In 1999, Metropolis entered phase I of its plans to develop youth rugby in the northeast Minneapolis area. All of the local rugby teams have benefitted greatly from the opening in August 1998 of the new rugby field at Columbia Park. Off the pitch, Metropolis RFC remains active in the community, participating in the Christmas "Toys for Tots" program, community food shelf benefits, and holiday visits to senior citizens groups.

Like to travel? Meet new people? Metropolis and the Metro Old Boys have toured the world with organized home-stay tours to England, Wales, Scotland, Australia and Jamaica. Through these experiences, many of our players have arranged individual visits and club-stays with our international friends. The club enjoys a particularly close association with the Old Laurentian RFC from Rugby, England, the birthplace of rugby football.
